[edit] BC296D User ReviewsAdded: July 21st 2004 Last week (07-13-2004) I received my BC296D, primarily to be used in the Baltimore, MD metro area. Though, it'll be used in travel around the state and interstate also. I'd give the unit a strong thumb-UP. Overall it's a 92 on a 100 scale. The battery life is kind of short, but with the add-in card that can be expected. Disappointing is that the battery is still a pack-style NiMH array. The unit gets very warm when charging, and warmer yet if it's turned-ON while while charging. I keep it running 24-7 with few short breaks. Sound and squelch are great. Speaker quality is a 94 on a 100 scale. Programming it was a snap, but I cheated and used ScanControl from 3D-Technologies. It cut channel and talkgroup setup time on five banks by probably 70%. When will Uniden get wise and modify the portables to use flash memory cards for channel & talkgroup data. Switching entire lists of channels and talkgroups would be just a simple matter of removing one tiny card and inserting another. Cards could be preprogrammed ahead of time with adapted scanner control software without the scanner being attached to the PC. Theoretically a user could preprogram a handful of cards, one for each state area being passed-through, and travel across the USA and just switch memory cards when entering or leaving states. Put the card in for the next state, and go. I won't fault the price, despite some folks feeling that it's way too high. It was delivered to my door for $529.95. Uniden has produced a quality and versatile product with oodles of features. The embedded grip-pads alone are a blessing, when the unit is held in sweaty hands. And the tiny lanyard ring on the belt-clip hinge pin is a great feature that can help avoid costly drop repairs, or the cost of replacing a drop-mangled BC296D. My one serious gripe is that the BC296D won't make coffee, but I can live with that shortcoming. Added: January 11th 2004 I got the scanner 5 days ago. Its great! A very reliable, LOUD, CLEAR, and user friendly scanner if i must say so. PROs: Has both CQPSK (used in Florida..i think.....not verified) and C4FM decode ability (Pro-96 has no CQPSK). Can receive the I-CALL radio to radio personnel calls (PRO-96 does not have this ability). Everything else it has is compareable/equal to the PRO-96. CONs: Battery lasts only 6-8 hrs while scanning. Price was a little high, but......if you need the technology now....you have to pay for it! :-) Besides, i have been a scanner buff for over 17 years (i started with Radio Shacks 2 channel crystal controled scanner...lol...and im in Federal law enforcement now. P.S. I also worked for the Shack Years ago and there products are great also.
