Champaign County Scanner - Quick Reference

All Champaign County METCAD Dispatched Public Safety Communications will be migrating to Motorola digital trunked systems in 2007. Rantoul is expected to join the MDICE system. It's unknown what Parkland College will do.

Police Emergency Situation channels

If you don't want to listen to all the mundane police calls, here is where the action is during police emergency situations

155.475 (CSQ) ISPERN - State Police emergency broadcasts [simplex]
155.655 (107.2) Urbana PD tactical channel [repeater]
453.250 (118.8) METCAD ch 5 (used when Champaign PD has a standoff/emergency) [repeater]
453.975 (118.8) Urbana Ch 2 (used when Urbana PD has a standoff situation) [repeater]
453.0625 (118.8) ?METRO team [simplex]
154.950 (CSQ) Illinois State Police DCI surveillance [simplex]
155.055 (CSQ) IREACH - ISP troopers can't monitor 453.975, so they communicate with METCAD on 155.055

I imagine most of these, with the exception of ISPERN, will be going away in a few months as communications move to MDICE and Starcom21

MDICE - METCAD DIGITAL INTEROPERABLE COMMUNICATIONS ENVIRONMENT

Urbana PD, U of I PD, Champaign County Sheriff's Department and all rural PDs are now using this system

METCAD Public Safety agencies will be migrating from VHF/UHF to a state-of-the-art Project 25 TRS simulcast system in mid-2007. For more information about this system:

Implementation Timeline

  • March 23, 2007 - new 285' tower is erected at METCAD
  • March 27, 2007 - METCAD granted FCC license for the new MDCIE system WQGQ800
  • May 23, 2007 - System begins transmitting and first transmissions are heard on TG: 21002
  • June 2007 - Testing continues daily on TG 21002
  • June 18, 2007 - METCAD posts the public safety talkgroup layout on its website
  • August 21, 2007 - Sheriff's Department is now using MDICE radios ('Patrol 2' - TG 21501) which is cross-patched with 453.900/453.150.
  • August 26, 2007 - Nearly all the Urbana PD and U of I PD officers are using MDICE radios, but their TG is still simulcast over 453.900/453.150. There are currently three full-time patches between UHF and MDICE:
    • 453.150/453.900 = PATROL 2 (21501)
    • 453.975 = INCIDENT 3 (22503)
    • 453.250 = INCIDENT 4 (22504)

Champaign County Sheriff's Department

As of August 21, 2007, the Champaign County Sheriff's Department is using MDICE TG 21501 'Patrol 2'. This talkgroup is being cross-patched with 453.900/453.150 for now.

Dispatched by METCAD.

  • Units: 500s are Sheriff's Department Deputies. The Sheriff's Department uses the MDICE TRS TG 21501. Also on the same channel/talkgroup are U of I PD (100s/200s), Urbana PD (300s/400s) and Village PDs (6Letter#). 6Letter# are village PD units (the number corresponds to the beat; such as 6David24 is a Tolono PD officer and 6Baker22 is a Mahomet PD officer).
  • The County Jail is still on 453.300 (156.7) and the Courthouse is still on 460.225 (118.8), however.
  • The Sheriff's Department uses 453.150 (118.8) for dispatch. 453.150 is always patched to 453.900 so you hear the same radio traffic on both channels. Ch2 is talkaround on 453.150. Ch4 453.625 is rarely used, but is a countywide repeater for the Sheriff's Department. For events like U of I football games or the annual County Fair, the deputies use Ch5 453.250 (118.8).

Champaign County EMA (severe weather spotting)

The main frequency to monitor when storms approach is the 155.040 (131.8) repeater. Also worth monitoring is the Champaign County ARES spotter channel 444.100 (162.2). Since both of these frequencies are used for other purposes during regular weather, it is best to lock them out in your scanner until the weather turns severe. 155.115 (131.8) is used solely for EMA purposes.

Unofficial St. Patrick's Day - U of I

Each year around the first weekend of March, many U of I students celebrate a day long drinking holiday called "Unofficial St. Patrick's Day". There are surprisingly few interesting scanner calls on this day (mostly overconsumption medical calls and 10-38's), but here is what was active this past Friday:

Unofficial St Patrick's Day 2007
Champaign PD used 453.400 (campustown bars and off-campus parties)
U of I PD was on 453.250 during the day, but at 4:30pm they switched back to 453.900 (campus area calls)
Champaign/Urbana Fire (and medical paging) 154.070
Urbana PD used 453.900 (very little "Unofficial" related activity compared to 453.400 or 453.250 - I locked out 453.900 until U of I switched back to this channel)
