[Note: this overview will be updated once ALCO completes rebanding]

The ALCO Trunked system pools its frequencies in to two groups, "Local" and "Wide". What this means is not all sites have all frequencies. In the outlying areas such as Sunol and Livermore the sites covering these areas (Crane Ridge and Sunol Ridge for example) only have specifc frequencies there. If you live in the Tri-Valley area you'll only hear the agencies designated to operate on the Wide channels. If you attempt to listen to San Leandro PD you will not hear them unless you're in an area that picks up the sites in Western Alameda County. The scanner will appear to trunk out to a frequency but no audio will be heard. When a talkgroup is designated Wide or Local it will never use both. It's either setup for one or the other.

If you check the Local frequencies for audio in conventional mode you can determine if you'll be able to hear all talkgroups on the system. If you hear nothing then you're limited to agencies using the Wide talkgroups only.

Some examples of Local talkgroups are AMR North Dispatch, ALCO Sheriff Tac 7, Alameda PD Dispatch and San Leandro PD Dispatch.

Some examples of Wide talkgroups are Union City PD Dispatch, ALCO Sheriff Dispatch 1 & 2, ALCC Sheriff Tac 8, ALCO Fire, Newark PD Dispatch and Fremont PD Dispatch.
