Overview

The Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC) operates all of the state-owned correctional institutions located in Wisconsin. Facility operations are managed under the Division of Adult Institutions (DAI) and the Division of Juvenile Corrections (DJC). The 36 adult institutions and facilities under the DAI are further sub-divided, with 19 operated under DAI directly, 14 operated under the Wisconsin Correctional Center System (WCCS), and three operated under the Wisconsin Women's Correctional System (WWCS).

Four additional secure facilities house inmates (or patients) with various mental health conditions. These facilities (Mendota Mental Health Institute, Winnebago Mental Health Institute, Wisconsin Resource Center, and Sand Ridge Secure Treatment Center) share many similarities with the DOC correctional facilities, however they are operated by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS).

Radio Systems

The DOC uses a variety of radio systems. Prisons under DAI typically had analog Motorola TRS systems utilizing 800MHz. These systems are slowly being migrated to WISCOM. Four facilities are utilizing a separate DOC P25 system, although the Talkgroup and Radio ID assignments follow the WISCOM assignment plans.

Several correctional centers and juvenile facilities are located adjacent or near DAI facilities. These facilties often use the same radio systems as their larger neighbor. Community facilities not located near another larger facility typically have a single conventional operations frequency, see the DOC RRDB entry for details.

Division of Adult Institutions

The Division of Adult Institutions operates the 19 Maximum, Medium, and Minumum security prisons in Wisconsin. DAI inmates requiring mental health care are transferred to the Wisconsin Resource Center, operated by DHS.
