Tower 1, Crash 3, Engine 4, Tanker 5B (The "B" differentiator shows that Company 5 has two tankers thus the radio call signs "Tanker 5" & "Tanker 5B"), and so forth.

  • Crash - Crash/rescue truck

Fire/Rescue Designator - Agency Identifier - Member Number

"3" is the Fire Department member designator.

  • 3-1-0 to 3-1-99 - Firefighters from Department 1
  • 3-3-0 to 3-3-99 - Firefighters from Company 3
  • Chief # - Fire Chief
  • Deputy Chief # - Deputy Fire Chief
  • Assistant Chief # - Assistant Fire Chief

EMS Apparatus

Type (Staffing) Designator - Station Designator - Redundant Equipment Differentiator

All ambulances are licensed at the Advanced Life Support (ALS) level, however radio call signs are based on the apparatus' staffing level. Basic Life Support (BLS) staffed units are designated "Rescue" and ALS staffed units are designated "Med" or "Medic." For example, Rescue 2B, Med 5, Medic 15, etc. Note that the redundant equipment differentiator is NOT an indication of run order.

  • Medic - Ambulance
  • Response - EMS response vehicle

Volunteer EMS Personnel

Fire/Rescue Designator - Agency Identifier - Member Number

"2" is the Basic Life Support (BLS) (EMT or Advanced EMT) Rescue Squad member designator and "16" is the Advanced Life Support (ALS) (EMT-Intermediate or Paramedic) Rescue Squad member designator .

  • 2-2-0 to 2-2-99 - BLS providers from Squad 2
  • 2-3-0 to 2-3-99 - BLS providers from Squad 3
  • 16-01 to 16-99 - ALS providers (Countywide)
  • Captain # - Rescue Captain (Equal in rank to Fire Chief in ICS scheme)
  • Lieutenant # - Rescue Lieutenant

Career Staff

Franklin County Public Safety (Squad 1) employs approximately 54 full-time and 20 part-time employees that perform administrative and operational duties. Administrative staff are headquartered in the Public Safety Center in Rocky Mount, while field staff are located in the Rocky Mount, Ferrum, Glade Hill, Snow Creek, Boones Mill, Fork Mountain, and Westlake stations. Career staff are cross-trained as firefighters and are able to respond with fire/rescue apparatus as needed.
