KCMO Police, Fire, and other city services use the [[Kansas_City_Metro_-_Metropolitan_Area_Regional_Radio_System_(MARRS) MARRS Regional P25 system]]. Some interesting facts and talkgroups about the system:
* [http://www.kcpd.org/masterindex/files/dm/dm0417.pdf KCMO police radio assignments]
+
*Occasionally the traffic/tactical (33059) and Animal Control (33200) talkgroups are patched with one of the police patrol zone talkgroups. This often occurs during high call volumes or when a major incident is in progress.
* Occasionally, the traffic talkgroup (10-027) is patched into one of the police patrol talkgroups such as central or metro. This often occurs when there is a chase or other significant activity. It also seems that nightly this talkgroup is patched into one of the patrol groups almost all night. That may be due to shortage of dispactch officers.
+
*The KCPD helicopter identifies itself as "690", and can be heard on one of the patrol zone talkgroups when they're working an assignment (suspect searches, etc). When the helicopter is not assigned to a call, they return to the Traffic/Tactical talkgroup (33059).
* The KCMO helicopter identifies itself as "690" and can be heard on one of the police patrol talkgroups periodically. At other times, 690 returns to Tac air.
+
*Prostitution, narcotics, and other "sting" operations often take place on the special ops talkgroups (33067-33076) or on the designated investigative talkgroups. Due to the investigative/sensitive nature of such activity, most operations are encrypted.
* Prostitution and drug sting operations can often be heard on special operations channels. Channel 2 (10-045) seems to be the most common.
+
*Twice daily (usually at 6AM and 1PM) and during severe weather events, there is a weather alert broadcast on the MERS talkgroup (33017). These broadcasts originate from the [http://www.weather.gov/eax/ National Weather Service Office in Pleasant Hill, MO]. This talkgroup is also used by area fire departments to check wind speed/direction when they're working haz-mat or grass fire calls.
* twice daily and during inclement weather, there is a weather alert broadcast on MERS (09-031). This comes from the [http://www.crh.noaa.gov/eax/ National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill]. This channel is also occasionally used by KCMO FD to inquire about weather (typically wind) conditions at different locations around the city.

TGID 36 is IPD north zone which covers all of the city north of 23rd street. TGID 54 is IPD south zone that covers the city south of 23rd street. Center zone is TGID 3 and is typically used as an alternate frequency for license checks and operations that yield too much radio traffic for north or south zone air. Center zone is occasionally used for DWI checkpoint communications and officers working details on Noland Road during the summer months.

Talkgroup 36 is IPD North Zone Dispatch which covers the North side of Independence (generally North of 23rd St). Talkgroup 54 is IPD South Dispatch which covers the South side of Independence (generally South of 23rd St). Talkgroup 3 is known as IPD "Channel 3", and is typically used as an alternate channel for license checks and operations that occupy too much air time on the regular zone talkgroups. Channel 3 is also used during DWI checkpoints. All IPD talkgroups went fully encrypted in 2013.

IPD operates in 3 shifts and the radio numbers reflect the shift.  100 series units are day shift officers whose districts number from east to west across the city.  The second digit identifies the district, so 111 is the north zone car whose district is the far northwest corner of Independence.  As the cars number higher (112, 113 etc..) their district coverage shifts eastward.  200 series are second shift and 300 series are night officers.  Units numbering in the 400's are traffic units. 800 series belong to SRT officers and 900's are off duty officers working security details in the city.

Metropolitan Area Regional Radio System (MARRS)

KCMO Police, Fire, and other city services use the Kansas_City_Metro_-_Metropolitan_Area_Regional_Radio_System_(MARRS) MARRS Regional P25 system. Some interesting facts and talkgroups about the system:

  • Occasionally the traffic/tactical (33059) and Animal Control (33200) talkgroups are patched with one of the police patrol zone talkgroups. This often occurs during high call volumes or when a major incident is in progress.
  • The KCPD helicopter identifies itself as "690", and can be heard on one of the patrol zone talkgroups when they're working an assignment (suspect searches, etc). When the helicopter is not assigned to a call, they return to the Traffic/Tactical talkgroup (33059).
  • Prostitution, narcotics, and other "sting" operations often take place on the special ops talkgroups (33067-33076) or on the designated investigative talkgroups. Due to the investigative/sensitive nature of such activity, most operations are encrypted.
  • Twice daily (usually at 6AM and 1PM) and during severe weather events, there is a weather alert broadcast on the MERS talkgroup (33017). These broadcasts originate from the National Weather Service Office in Pleasant Hill, MO. This talkgroup is also used by area fire departments to check wind speed/direction when they're working haz-mat or grass fire calls.

Independence, MO

Independence Police and Fire also use the Kansas_City_Metro_-_Metropolitan_Area_Regional_Radio_System_(MARRS) MARRS Regional P25 system.

Independence Fire is dispatched on talkgroup 21 and uses talkgroups 19 and 20 for tactical/fireground communications.
