Fire Radio Codes

In Onondaga County, "10" Codes are no longer used. Signals based on the former 10 codes are used interchangeably with plain language (with the exception of Signal 49, 50, 98, 99)

  • Signal 32 - Use Caution
  • Signal 49 - Need Police Assistance, situation growing dangerous. (Ongoing domestic, combative patient, etc.)
  • Signal 50 - Need Immediate Police assistance ASAP - Can be used interchangeably with a "Mayday" message on a fireground.


  • Signal 79 - MVC with no injuries (Property damage)
  • Signal 79 Possible - MVC possible injuries
  • Signal 80 - MVC with injuries
  • Signal 98 - Minor Fire/Working Car Fire/Trash fire/etc.
  • Signal 99 - Working Structure Fire

Radio Pre-Alert Tones

Onondaga County Dispatchers use a series of pre alert tones before Fire/EMS calls are dispatched. Can also be used for special announcements.

1000 Hz Tones
  • Single Tone - Incoming EMS, Rescue, or Miscellaneous Fire Call
  • Double Tone - Incoming Box Alarm, Possible Building Fire
  • Triple Tone - Incoming Signal 99 Dispatch (Working Fire)
  • Pulsating Tone - Incoming Important Information (i.e. address change, important information of building features/hazards)
Warble Tones

Building Evacuation, "MAYDAY", or other significant fireground hazard (i.e. wires down, collapse hazard)
