One Beep - Signals an EMS call.
 
Two Beeps - Signals a Fire or Fire/EMS call.
 
 
2nd/3rd/etc. Emergency Call - Signals that the station being requested has 2, 3, or however many pending calls.  These will also include a second station being dispatched if the station is out of apparatus to respond to the call.

Roanoke County Fire Stations

Roanoke County Fire and Rescue's 12 stations are located across the county and are strategically placed to serve our citizens. Most stations have a 12-hour career shift from 6am-6pm M-F, with volunteers serving all other times and on most holidays. Roanoke County utilizes the following appratatus:


Apparatus: Wagon - Typically the first-due truck for any type of Fire call, and will run 2nd due to EMS calls during career hours at some stations.

Engine - Basically a wagon, but most stations will have both types of first-due apparatus.

Tanker - Used in rural and areas where hydrant access is unavailable or impractical, and can be used to respond to second emergency calls.

Ladder/Tower - Aerial apparatus that is dispatched to all fire-related calls, strategically placed at the north, south, east, and west ends of the county.

Brush/Attack - Apparatus specifically designed for wildland firefighting, typically four-wheel drive.

Utility/Car - An SUV, car, or truck used to provide additional manpower at a scene, or to provide first-responder care.

  • Company 1/Medic 1 - North County Station, fully career staffed by Roanoke County. Located at Plantation & Hershburger Road.

Roanoke County Unit Designations

Most Roanoke County stations have units numbered by their home station's location.
  • Format: Medic / Rescue Station Unit#
  • Desc: ALS / BLS # #
  • Example: Medic 5 2
  • For example "Medic 52" is Hollins Unit, #2

Other units are specialty units that roam around stations, usually supervisors or chiefs. Replace '#' with station number.

  • Medic # - ALS Staffed Truck of at least EMT-I or above
  • Rescue # - BLS Staffed Truck consisting of an EMT-B or EMT-E
  • Air 9 - Mobile Air Refill Truck, typically for Structure fires
  • Tower 9 - Ladder Truck with basket
  • Rehab 2 - Rehab unit for fires,to Rehab Fire Fighters and Victims
  • Chaplin 1 or 2 - County Chaplin, helped victims of emergencies
  • EMS 2 - On-Duty EMS Captain
  • Battalion 1 - On-Duty Batt. Chief
  • HTR 7 - Heavy Technical Rescue
  • Squad # - Heavy Vehicular Rescue Truck, Jaws of life
  • FM 1,2,3 - Fire Marshals
  • Division Chief 1,2,3,4 - Division Chiefs for Roanoke County
  • Chief # - Chief of a station and/or Rescue squad
  • #50 - Cheif of a rescue Squad
  • Engine # - Primary Response Fire Engine
  • Wagon # - Primary Response Fire Engine
  • Tanker # - Tanker Truck that holds 1500 gallons of water or more
  • Brush # - Light brush fire response for small fires
  • Car # - Response Vehicle for Fire/Rescue
  • Utility # - Response Vehicle for Fire/Rescue

Roanoke County Call Types

  • Fire Service Call - Fire Service Call, usually water leaks.
  • Service Call - Patient needs help getting up, no injuries
  • BLS - Basic Life Support
  • ALS - Advanced Life Support
  • ALS-Critical - Advanced Life Support + Major event (ex. Code)
