The Salem Fire-EMS Department provides fire and emergency medical services to the citizens and visitors of the City of Salem, Virginia and is an all career fire and EMS department. The department is responsible for providing fire and EMS coverage to an area of approximately 15 square miles and to a population of approximately 25,000 residents. Salem Fire-EMS operates out of three fire stations and an administrative office. The department staffs two engine companies, one quint company, three ALS ambulances, one battalion chief and one EMS supervisor 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The department also staffs a fourth ambulance 12 hours a day, Monday through Friday. The all-volunteer Salem Rescue Squad also provides EMS coverage for the city on a part-time and on an as-needed basis. The Salem Fire-EMS Department was founded in 1854 as the Salem Fire Department.

The Salem Rescue Squad is an all-volunteer rescue squad that operates within the City of Salem and falls under the jurisdiction of the Salem Fire-EMS Department. The rescue squad is staffed on week nights, weekends, holidays and during special events. The Salem Rescue Squad was the second independent rescue squad founded in the United States, second only to Roanoke EMS, located in the neighboring city of Roanoke. Salem Rescue was founded in 1932 as the Salem Life Saving Crew.
