I got the scanner last week. The user manual is vary vague and lets you fumble around trying to get things to work. I finally gave up trying to do instruction #7 when programming for trunk scanning. It simply will not work as the manual says! Simple things such as how to dim the dial are gone. Other multi-function buttons are left without instructions for operation as well. BUT the scanner seems to work well otherwise. I guess user manuals are only understood by the person writing them! I've been unable to find the software program that is mentioned several times in the manual on the Uniden web site. Was it worth the money, YES, but there is really no reason the simple things could not have been addressed. I am hoping my issues with the scanner will be addressed as more people

buy it. I will keep on experimenting with it and report back.

Ok, the radio does work well, even on trunking. Throw the manual away. It's totally useless. I was about ready to send the radio back thinking it was broken when I figured it out. The problem turned out to be the ARC Software, not the radio. Now the problem wasn't because the software is bad, it's not. ARC898 is a wonderful piece of software. It really helps though if you know what you are doing. I have a Motorola Type 2 - 800Mhz trunking system in the town I am in, (Portland Oregon) and when I entered the channels into the ARC software, it decided automatically that the Mode was FM and the Step was 5.0. This is totally wrong! The mode has to be NFM and the step 12.5. Once I

changed that and re-uploaded to the radio, boom! Trunking all day long. If you program the radio manually from the front panel, I don't think you'd have that problem since I tried that and when I hit enter it showed NFM and 12.5 and that was how I knew the ARC version was bogus. Hope this helps someone. BTW, the ARC software doesn't display Talkgroup ID Tags in the current version, but I am told the next version will. Cool.

Several months later I can say it is a good scanner overall. Forget about using the manual though and buy the ArcTel software. It is soooo much easier to use, particularly for trunking operations. Uniden has addressed their tone issue and that now works ok. The manual is still a very poor user manual that was written by someone who has never seen the scanner!

I bought one and found the regular scanning superb with great

sensitivity, audio, etc. BUT when going into trunk tracking a

different story and I never could scan programed talk groups.

I returned unit to the dealer and am awaiting a replacement

which hopefully will be "better".

This programs in my humble opinion deserves a 10 - but having never had any program of a ten as a base point it get's a nine. A great program, ease of use and functional.

I believe this software would work with any Trunking radio, as long as you have VB 6.0 or higher installed in Windows.

An excellent utility leaving only the imagination of the user on how one can exploit its many uses. Rated a nine as v2.9.0 is supposedly the last version to support the BC245xlt - hopefully support will be restored and it'll get 10 stars.

You all did a good job. Alot of these guys & gals expect too much when it comes to software and instructions. If I can muddle around with it and get the hang of it then any of these prissy prisses should be able to also. And I am by far the smartest guy on the planet. Thanks for the use of the software. - Mike (Springtown TX)

Clean and simple makes it very effective. I would give it a 10, if it would update the ID ALPHA tags on the scanner itself.

Excellent for capturing audio for those unknown channels/talk groups. Documentation could be better.

Wish it had help built-in, but for the price, who's complaining? Excellent program that does what it's supposed to with no muss, no fuss. Packs a lot of features and works well with Windows XP. Great resource for those of us who own TrunkTrackers.

I could never get this working even though all of my other trunking programs worked. Dose NOT work for Pro-1053. Download did not say you had to have the certen scanners listed in the notes.

== Very good scanner ==

I purchased a BC898T last week. It has been my first trunking scanner, and the second scanner I have ever owned. I had a conventional bearcat scanner that had 10-20 channels about 20 years ago, so this is significantly different. Personally, I didn't think the manual was GREAT, but I did manage to understand it after re-reading it a couple of times. I've pretty much got all the serious stuff figured down, and now I ust have to figure out some of the smaller details. I'm very happy with this scanner. It gets great reception even with the included antenna. I have no problem pulling in signals from about 30 miles away loud and clear. I purchased the Arc898t software (but I programmed my first system manually) and highly recommend it as well. I tried both the Butel and the uniden software before purchasing one and the Butel seems a bit more versatile.
