Wouxun KG-UV2D Notes

It is not known how much of this information applies to other firmware versions or models. It probably applies to the KG-UVD1P and KG-UV3D.

Test Unit

  • Wouxun KG-UV2D
  • Firmware KGUV2D unknown revision
  • S/N J11****
  • First three digits of S/N is reported to be the manufacturing date code

CTCSS/DCS Decoding

  • When in CTCSS or DCS decode mode occasionally the squelch will close intermittently for no apparent reason. The decoder or STE may be falsing on received voice audio when this happens.

Dealer Mode

Allows changes to be made to memory channels without deleting and reentering the channel.

  • Press and hold the [8] key while powering on the unit.
    • Dislplay shows two rows of dashes ======
    • Enter password [2] [6] [8] [1] [6] [0]
    • Display defaults to Channel Mode
  • To exit dealer mode after making changes:
    • Press [MENU] [A/B] [MENU]
  • Dealer Mode works on the KG-UVD1P and KG-UV2D. Unkown if applicable to other models.

Memory Loss Problem

  • Read about the Wouxun defective memory problem at: http://www.wouxun.us/Good-Bye-Wouxun/Good-Bye-Wouxun.html
  • This test unit developed the memory loss problem after about three years and it only happens occasionally when switching from "Frequency Mode" to "Channel Mode".
  • When the memory loss problem happens to this unit, the top display goes to memory channel 0, which does not exist. (the KG-UV2D only has memories numbered 1-128)
    • If the unit is in CHFREQ mode the display will show frequency "???.????" and memory channnel "00".
    • If the unit is in CH mode the display will show "CH-000".
  • Powering cycling the unit when when it is in this state causes a full reset and loses all memories and settings.
  • Changing channels when when the unit is in this state fixes the problem temporarily with no loss of memory or settings.

Power On Messages

Holding certain keys while powering on the unit displays the following messages:

  • [3] Firmware version
  • [6] Unknown function (shows two rows of dashes)
  • [9] Unknown function (shows two rows of dashes)

Roger Beep

  • Beginning of Transmission (BOT)
    • Delay time 380 mS
    • Tone 819 Hz 130 mS
  • End of Transmission (EOT)
    • 1st tone 530 Hz 130 mS
    • 2nd tone 742 Hz 130 mS
    • No delay or space between tones

Scanning

  • Scanning stops on any signal or noise even in CTCSS/DCS decode mode.
  • Scan speed is ~5.4 channels per second. (Takes 18.5 seconds to scan 100 channels)
  • If priority channel is enabled, the priority channel is scanned after every other channel. This cuts the scan speed in half (Takes twice as much time to scan all channels).
  • Scan delay time CO mode ~3 seconds.
  • Scan resume time TO mode ~5 seconds. If carrier drops before 5 seconds, there is a delay of the time remaining until 5 seconds is up before scanning resumes.
  • Backlight comes on while scanning, goes of when scan stops on active channel, comes back on when scan resumes.

Squelch Tail Elimination (STE)

  • The radio sends a 55 Hz STE tone for ~220 mS when the PTT key is released. This happens even in CSQ (no tone) and cannot be disabled.
  • Upon receiving a 55 Hz tone the the receive audio is muted, even when there is no receive CTCSS tone selected (CSQ). The receiver remains muted for ~300 mS after the carrier or 55 Hz tone drops.
  • When DCS (CDCSS) encode is enabled, the radio sends the standard 134.4 Hz CDCSS turnoff code for ~220 mS when the PTT key is released.
  • The microphone remains hot while the STE 55 Hz tone or DCS 134.4 Hz turnoff code are being sent.
  • In decode mode if a signal with CTCSS or DCS is received and the tone is dropped, the squelch remains open for ~200 mS.
