The 162nd Fighter Wing, Arizona Air National Guard, is based at Tucson International Airport, Tucson, AZ. There are three F-16 Squadrons under this wing.
The wing has three different missions.
- F-16 Training
- To Foreign Nationals that fly the F-16 Fighter
- Snowbird Operations
- This mission is based at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base (DMAFB). The detachment based there provides basic support for other units, U.S. and Foreign, which fly training sorties out of DMAFB due to the optimal weather and the ranges available to them in Arizona.
- NORAD/Homeland Defense
- This mission also operates from DMAFB. The Alert Detachment provides 24-hour coverage for NORAD/Homeland Defense type missions, i.e. reaction to illegal aircraft crossing the border from Mexico to the United States, aerial defense over high value areas/events - like the visit of the President of the United States to Arizona or the Super Bowl in Phoenix.
- The unit was evaluated on 14 April 2009 and received the "highest possible marks", per the 162nd FW website.
