Additional System Details

System Information

The AFRRCS network is a trunked radio system in the province of Alberta, Canada, built by Harris Corporation, in co-ordination with the government entities Service Alberta and the Alberta Solicitor General, office of Public Security (SGPS).

The system is an APCO Project 25 Phase 1 (FDMA) digital trunking system in the 700MHz band. Some sites in mountainous terrain and other similar regions will utilize a "VHF overlay", involving non-trunked (conventional) P25 VHF-hi (136-174) frequencies.

The province mandates that the system must work with any/all P25 equipment and infrastructure, such that any customer agency that wishes to use the network can purchase their favorite P25-compliant equipment and be assured it will function.

The stated coverage goal of the system is "95 percent of the primary and secondary highways in Alberta".

This system is intended to carry all the radio traffic of the various government agencies that currently use wireless/radio communications, such as Sustainable Resource Development, Alberta Sheriffs, Alberta Health Services, and so on. As well, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), who provide municipal policing to the province, will use the system. Any first responders (Fire, EMS, Police, etc.) that wish are welcome to join the network.

Build Timeline

According to the Government of Alberta AFRRCS website, the system will be built in two stages - one stage in 2012 (from March 2012 to February 2013) and one stage in 2013 (March 2013 to February 2014). The schedule announced by the province indicates that the "east half" of the province will be built out in 2012 and the "west half" in 2013. Construction of mountain and VHF sites is planned to happen in both build seasons.

Note that the AFRRCS data calls the regions to be built out together as Integration Areas. These areas coincide geographically and numerically with Alberta census divisions.

(Build order has become less relevant now that the timeline is well into Build Season 2; sites are being constructed and brought online in many integration areas as they become available, regardless of the original schedule. As such, the build order previously listed here has been removed.)
