*Alleghany County Sheriff, City of Covington and Town of Clifton Forge have returned to the analog system and have dropped the digital Nexedge system. All communications in the county are analog as of August 2016.

Alleghany County Sheriff, City of Covington and Clifton Forge have switched over to an advanced rolling code encryption on a Digital Nexedge system. They use their old analog frequencies for this system.
+
*Alleghany County is planning to transition to a Project 25 Phase 2 communications system by over the next two years and has contracted with AECOM, a communications consulting firm, to assist with this process. An RFQ was released by AECOM and Alleghany County in December 2016 to find a firm to construct this new system. A firm will be selected by May 2017 with a target completion date of December 2018. The RFQ document can be found on the County's website.

*The full switchover occurred on November 15th 2011 although it was plagued with problems which have caused it to be virtually dropped for the last several years

*New radios have been provided to at least some VSP units that I would imagine would be those who work in the area regularly as well as at least some if not all fire/rescue units.

*The rescue squads and possibly fire dept. vehicles have these radios in their units although they still use the open 800 and 39.5 channels for fire/ems comms.

*The system allows them to revert to analog at any time should they so desire or in case of a digital system failure as well as communications with other agencies who do not have the new radios. They can go back and forth as they like from analog to digital encryption.

*This system because of the Rolling Code Encryption is completely unmonitorable

*COVINGTON PD has completely dropped use of this digital system some time back and has no plans to return to it. They don't like it at all. They are back on their old analog frequencies.

'''*NEW INFO AS OF 1/01/2014'''

*Alleghany county SO appears to have fully working computers in their units now with which they get dispatched on as well as additional information on calls. This means quite a few calls go out over these computers rather than on the radio.

*Also as of the new year it seems that Alleghany is concurrently using both analog and digital at deputy's/dispatcher's discretion. At least the usage has been up quite a bit over the last weeks. Cell phones are also still used.

*It also appears that they have put up multiple towers around the county or something of the like as they often tell units to switch towers beyond just the old two. Handheld coverage has dramatically increased and improved. The units using HTs are often the ones told to switch towers with impressive results. They also have some type of voting system in place although it doesn't seem to work very well as noted above.

*Bottom line this has reduced monitorable radio traffic in this area. How long it will last is up for debate as they frequently have been having radio problems. Then again maybe that should be 'Continue to have frequent radio problems.' :)
