Allegheny County (PA) Pittsburgh City Police Terminology, Acronyms, and Abbreviations

The following list details terms commonly heard on the City of Pittsburgh Police radio channels. SWAT terminology is discussed in their separate Wiki section.


ACJ - Allegheny County Jail

Actor - Suspect, perpetrator, bad guy, etc.

Board - "The Board” is a computer graph/table with the status of each individual Zone’s patrol vehicles. Sometimes it becomes necessary to clean-up "The Board” and get it back in order with the proper status of units. "The Board is clear" when all calls have been answered by responding units.

CCR Number - Each call or incident a police officer responds to, no matter how minor, is assigned a unique record number. The numbering system starts at "1" for the first incident or call at the beginning of a calendar year. Numbers are assigned as calls come in or incidents are responded to. The CCR Number may also be referred to as "Number", "Detail", "Detail Number", etc.

DRE - Drug Recognition Expert

KGB327 - On the primary police dispatch Channels 1, 2 & 3, the radio dispatcher will announce, "Pittsburgh Police Radio KGB327". There is an FCC rule that license holders must announce their FCC call sign at the top of the hour. Channels 1, 2 & 3 are covered under FCC call sign KGB327.

MCB - Municipal Courts Building

Mover - A vehicle that is being stopped for a traffic violation.

PEMA - Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency

Run-Down - The shift schedule for a particular Zone. The Run-Down is faxed to radio dispatch by the Zone lieutenant on duty for that shift.

SDD - Special Deployment Division

Sector - The City of Pittsburgh is divided into six police Zones. Those Zones are further broken down into Sectors for assigning daily patrol work.
