Botetourt County Emergency Services Stations

Botetourt County has eight fire and rescue stations strategically placed throughout the county. Most of the stations house both fire and rescue with the exception of Fincastle which has two stations (one for fire and one for rescue). All of the stations in Botetourt are staffed by volunteers, but several have paid career staff. Station 2 (Troutville) and Station 4 (Fincastle VFD) have 24/7 career EMS units in their buildings. Station 3 (Buchanan) has a 12/7 (daytime) career ambulance staffed. Station 12 (Read Mountain) has a 10 hour (daytime) weekday career ambulance staffed by Roanoke County Fire & Rescue. Station 4 (Fincastle VFD) also has a 12 hour (daytime) weekday career fire engine staffed.

Rescue Designations

All ambulances mark up using a "Medic" or "Rescue" prefix followed by a three digit number scheme. "Medic" meaning an Advanced Life Support crew is on board. "Rescue" meaning a Basic Life Support crew is on board (Note: The "Rescue" prefix is currently being phased out, but is still recognized; a BLS ambulance simply marks up only using its three digit number now). If the ambulance is understaffed, the ambulance uses the suffix "Understaffed". All EMS response vehicles do not use a prefix (whether or not they have an ALS or BLS crew) when marking up. If a Medic (EMT-I or above) is on board then the unit uses a "Medic status" suffix.

Examples

  • Medic 152 - Is an ambulance based out of Rescue 1 (Blue Ridge) and has an ALS crew on board.
  • Rescue 252 - Is an ambulance based out of Rescue 2 (Troutville) and has a BLS crew on board.
  • 353 "Understaffed" - Is an ambulance based out of Rescue 3 (Buchanan) and doesn't have enough personnel to be staffed.
  • 450 "Medic status" - Is a response vehicle based out of Rescue 4 (Fincastle) and has a Medic on board.
  • 550 - Is a response vehicle based out of Rescue 5 (Eagle Rock) and has an EMT/Driver on board.

Personnel Designations

Volunteer

Botetourt fire and rescue volunteers are issued a three digit number for radio usage and department accountability. Each department is in charge of determining the qualifications for and issuing radio numbers to their personnel. The first number in the system is the same as the volunteer's home station number. The second number is used to distinguish if the volunteer is apart of the fire department or rescue squad. The third number does not have a specific meaning. Members of both fire and rescue in the same district are not issued two individual numbers.

  • #00-#49 - Volunteer Fire personnel
  • #50-#59 - Reserved for Rescue apparatus
  • #60-#99 - Volunteer Rescue personnel

Volunteer fire and rescue officers are assigned a radio designation that is specific to their rank, instead of their three digit number.

  • Chief # - Fire Chief
  • Assistant Chief # - Assistant Fire Chief
  • Deputy Chief # - Deputy Fire Chief
  • Captain # - Fire Captain
  • Lieutenant # - Fire Lieutenant
  • EMS # - Rescue Captain
  • EMS #A - Rescue 1st Lieutenant
  • EMS #B - Rescue 2nd Lieutenant

Botetourt County Emergency Services personnel are issued radio designations very similar to the volunteer system, but vary slightly.

  • County 1 - Director of Emergency Services
  • Division Chief 1 - Operations Division Chief
  • Division Chief 2 - Emergency Management Division Chief
  • Captain 7 - Administrative Captain
  • Fire 7 - Fire Engine Captain
