Chatham-Kent OPP Detachment is responsible for providing policing to all provincial areas of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, consisting primarily of traffic and marine safety. Highway enforcement and response to calls for service occurs along a 66 kilometre stretch of Highway 401 between Essex and Elgin Counties. The detachment also oversees enforcement on a 42 kilometre stretch of Highway 40 running through Chatham-Kent to the border with Lambton County. Our detachment is also impacted by the Windsor-Detroit border crossing to the west of our patrol area and the Sarnia-Port Huron border crossing to our north. Chatham-Kent encompasses several bodies of water – Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair and the Thames and Sydenham Rivers. Due to this, and a heavy recreational boating population, we maintain a full-time Marine Unit during the boating months. The role of this unit is patrol, enforcement, education and response to calls for service on the water. Our detachment provides logistical and administrative support to officers working on the Delaware Nation Territory, known as Moraviantown, as well as policing to that community when called upon. We also are responsible for law enforcement and safety, in conjunction with Park Wardens, at both Wheatley and Rondeau Provincial Parks. These parks are primarily busy in the summer, when thousands of campers and day-users take advantage of the natural benefits the parks have to offer.
