== Codes and Call Sign Prefix ==
 +
'''Law Enforcement'''
 +
All law enforcement unit radio calls begin with a prefix that indicates which agency they are a part of. The second part of this callsign is a letter that indicates the type of law enforcement unit. The third part of the callsign could be a car number or a badge number.
 +

 +
For example: 3-L-500 (not a real callsign) would indicate Charleston (3) patrol unit (L) officer 500.
 +

 +
See the key listed below for a list of each agency's prefix and the list of unit types.
 +

 +
Officers may not always use this full callsign when operating. They may only give the last portion.<br/>

  • Charleston Fire is dispatched with an alternating "high/low" tone that plays for several seconds prior to the dispatcher reading off the call info. It appears that this tone stays the same, regardless of the call (11/23).
  • In certain cases, such as a car crash with injuries, dispatcher may temporarily patch CPD and CFD together and the dispatch will be heard on both frequencies. Once the dispatch has been given, the patch will be stopped and both frequencies will be separate again.

Charleston Misc.

  • Charleston Police and Fire Dispatchers (and Sheriff Dispatcher) have now just been noted with a new tone/chirp upon keying up the mic. They are still analog however. This is the same tone/chirp that is heard with Mattoon Dispatchers who is already digital. Potential sign that Charleston and Sheriff are getting ready for digital? (12/06/2023)
  • After some digging, approval of this new digital radio system for Charleston Police and Fire occurred during the City Council meeting on April 4, 2023 (12/09/2023)

Codes and Call Sign Prefix

Law Enforcement All law enforcement unit radio calls begin with a prefix that indicates which agency they are a part of. The second part of this callsign is a letter that indicates the type of law enforcement unit. The third part of the callsign could be a car number or a badge number.

For example: 3-L-500 (not a real callsign) would indicate Charleston (3) patrol unit (L) officer 500.

See the key listed below for a list of each agency's prefix and the list of unit types.

Officers may not always use this full callsign when operating. They may only give the last portion.
KEY:
