Sometimes referred to as "bubble pack business band" frequencies, these are typically used by low power hand held business radios. Users might include construction site operations, schools, events, fast food drive-thru intercoms, and other miscellaneous business uses.

Some of the frequencies are restricted to itinerant use and some have different power restrictions.

Three of the GMRS frequencies below are listed as "color dots". This is because in the past, businesses and other organizations could obtain GMRS licenses and some radios were sold with color coded GMRS channels for business use. Under current FCC regulations business use of GMRS frequencies is generally not allowed.

There are other frequencies in the 450-470 MHz band that are restricted to low power operations in certain areas. See the links below the table and at the bottom of this page for detailed information.

* Modes and emission designators used depend on the bandwidth allowed on a particular frequency. Refer to the FCC rules linked above. FM, FMN and various digital modes such as MOTOTRBO, NXDN, or P25 may be used.

These are in use by low power hand-held transmitters typically used by families, children, and campers to communicate. Shopping malls, theme parks, and special events are all great locations to monitor FRS communications. No FCC license is needed.

An FCC license is required, and persons operating under a personal license may operate on any GMRS frequency. There is no requirement for frequency coordination or any other special permission, and all licensees must cooperate in the selection and sharing the available channels.
+
Radio Rental Companies
 +
Many radio rental companies have permanent licenses that allow temporary fixed, portable and mobile operations anywhere in the USA or in large multi-state areas of the USA.

Several of the channels are shared with the FRS channels, although FRS users are only allowed 0.5 watt transmitting power.
+
Radio rental companies sometimes obtain an STA (Special Temporary Authority) (temporary license) for their customers' short term events. These can include simplex channels, temporary repeaters or temporary trunked systems.

+
For many events, frequencies that are not in use in the particular area where the event will occur are obtained from a frequency coordinator well in advance. Almost any Business/Industrial Pool frequency can be used.

MURS is intended for short-range local communications. Antenna height is limited to 20 feet above structure or 60 feet above ground, whichever is the greater.  Very narrow bandwidth transmissions (maximum 11.25 kHz channel bandwidth, with +/- 2.5 kHz deviation) are permissible on all five MURS channels. The older +/- 5 kHz deviation signals (with a maximum 20 kHz channel bandwidth) are also permitted (but not required) on the two upper channels (in the 154 MHz band).

Revision as of 12:34, 20 April 2016

All frequencies listed on this page require a FCC license when used in the United States, except the five MURS frequencies (151.8200, 151.8800, 151.9400, 154.5700, 154.6000).

Color Dot/Star Itinerant and Low Power Frequencies

Many decades ago radio manufacturers adopted a color coding shceme so that radio users could easily identify which frequencies their equipment operated on.

Motorola Preset Frequencies

Some Motorola hand held business radios have factory preset channels. A few models are listed below. Complete frequency and tone information for some models can be found in the users manuals available on Motorola's web site.

Some of the manuals appear to contain duplicate channels and other typographical errors. If you can correct the errors please do so.

Radio Rental Companies

Many radio rental companies have permanent licenses that allow temporary fixed, portable and mobile operations anywhere in the USA or in large multi-state areas of the USA.

Radio rental companies sometimes obtain an STA (Special Temporary Authority) (temporary license) for their customers' short term events. These can include simplex channels, temporary repeaters or temporary trunked systems.

For many events, frequencies that are not in use in the particular area where the event will occur are obtained from a frequency coordinator well in advance. Almost any Business/Industrial Pool frequency can be used.

Some of the radio rental companies that have licenses for nationwide operation are listed below. This is not a complete list.
