Most fire units in Erie County are numbered under a cooperative 3-digit system where the 1st digit represents the department, the 2nd digit represents the type of apparatus, and the 3rd digit represents the home station of the unit. Obviously this breaks down when you have more than one kind of apparatus housed at a particular station. But things work out quite well for the most part.

Some of the communities to the extreme east of the county, namely Vermilion (City) FD & Florence Twp FD, seem more aligned with Lorain County for some reason, and do not participate in the Erie County system.
