Based at Naval Air Station North Island, Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility (FACSFAC) San Diego (call sign “Beaver Control”) is responsible for the scheduling, use, and control of several offshore warning areas off the coast of California. These warning areas, referred to as “Whiskey Areas”, are used by Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy pilots for flight training operations. Air operations in these warning areas include air combat maneuvering, air refueling, and mock dogfights. Prior to entering a warning area, aircraft will check in with “Beaver Control” on one of the assigned frequencies for the warning area. When several aircraft are working together in the same warning area, Beaver Control will often issue them a “discrete” or tactical frequency for air to air communications. A sectional chart can be used to locate the individual warning areas which are described below. Because this facility controls communications in multiple areas of the state (spanning from San Diego to north of San Francisco)
