Lexington Police Unit Numbering Scheme

An on-duty officer's unit number is comprised of three digits and (sometimes) a letter at the end.

  • The first digit corresponds with the officer's sector :
    • 1 for West, 2 for Central and 3 for East
  • The second digit corresponds with the officer's shift :
    • 1 is 1st (6 am to 4pm), 2 is 2nd (4pm to 1am), 3 is 3rd (10pm to 6am).
  • The third digit and letter together indicates the officer's beat within their sector.

For example:

  • 233B would be working in the Central sector on third shift on beat 3B.
  • Any unit ending in C or D is an extra unit working in either of the beats. For example, 124C would respond to any call in either the 4A or 4B beats in the West sector.
  • Also, any unit that ends in 9A, for example 239A, is a wagon unit.

However, there are many unit numbers that don't follow this pattern. See the chart below for an explanation:

One or Two digit unit numbers Administration (Chief, Asst. Chief, Commanders).
x00 - such as 100 or 400 Captains
x01, x02 - such as 101 or 202 Lieutenants
xy0A - such as 120A Sergeants - * x and y indicate sector and shift
5xx - such as 524 Detectives
2xx - such as 264 Special Duty -- e.g., Canine Units
6xx, 7xx, 8xx - such as 723 Safety/Traffic Units and Special Duty
9xx Personnel from other agencies (EMS, fire, federal, sheriff, etc.)
Five or Six digit numbers (i.e.: 54321 or 123456) Off-duty officers
