Jefferson County Fire Unit Identifiers

Identifiers are approved by and kept on file at the Office of Fire and Emergency Management. The following system of identifying radios shall be used for all radios operated in this system. Radio identifiers will consist of three parts as follows:

  • Part One The Department Number – Assigned by OFPC
  • Part Two Type of Vehicle
  • Part Three Serial Number of Vehicle in that type

Part Two identifiers shall be determined as follows:

  • 0 Chief Officers of the Department
  • 1 Engine – Fire apparatus with a permanently mounted fire pump of at least 750 gpm capacity, water tank, and hose body whose primary purpose is to combat structural and associated fires.
  • 2 Unassigned
  • 3 Mini Pumper/Brush Truck – Fire apparatus with a permanently mounted fire pump of at least 250 gpm capacity, water tank, and hose body whose primary purpose is to initiate a fire suppression attack on structural, vehicular, or vegetation fires, and to support associated fire department operations. This vehicle also has the ability to traverse lanes, driveway and other limited access areas that an Engine cannot.
  • 4 Engine/Tanker – Combination with quick dump capabilities
  • 5 Tanker
  • 6 Rescue / Non-Transporting EMS Unit (Flycar)
  • 7 Miscellaneous units such as Fire Boats, squad trucks, multi-purpose vehicles (seasonal brush truck/utility combination units), special designated personnel.
  • 8 Aerial Ladder and Platform
  • 9 Ambulance

Medical personnel duly authorized by the Office of Fire & Emergency Management and their agency’s Chief Officer shall be identified using their department number, level of certification (BLS, ILS, or ALS), and their unit number.

City of Watertown Identifiers

The City of Watertown Fire Department has implemented an apparatus identifier system which identifies via the type of vehicle and a numerical designation. WFD apparatus and chief officers are identified as follows:

  • Engine 1 (47-1-1 on County Frequencies)
  • Engine 2 (47-1-2 on County Frequencies)
  • Engine 3 (47-1-3 on County Frequencies)
  • Truck 1 (47-8-1 on County Frequencies)
