Nelson County is protected by a number of volunteer fire departments, and is also home to the Wintergreen Ski Resort. Wintergreen has it's own career fire department, running from two stations. Station 1 is located "on the mountain" near the ski areas. Station 2 is located about 10 miles away "in the valley" near the golf courses. Wintergreen Fire Department is dispatched by Nelson County, but often runs calls into neighboring Augusta County.
