The original numbering system for New Castle County stations began with Aetna of Newark (9) and stations were designated in alphabetical order through Wilmington Manor (28). It appears the station number assignments were made in the early 1950's. Port Penn (29) was assigned its number in 1957, while Belvidere (30) was assigned its number in 1963. Subsequent station numberings were based on when a particular sub-station was opened, with Volunteer Hose Co. of Middletown the most recent substation, opening in February 2006.  Numbers 1-39 are assigned to New Castle County, Numbers 40-69 are assigned to Kent County, and numbers 70-99 are assigned to Sussex County.
