'Northumberland County' has two fire departments and three rescue squads that are all operated by volunteers. There is also a Sea Rescue service that is operated in the county, also operated by volunteers, which handles distress calls from the waters around the county. The dispatch for the county's emergency services is located in the Sheriff's Office, in Heathsville. The call sign for dispatch is "Base 2"

FIRE:

CALLAO VOL. FIRE DEPT: Serves the county west of Avalon Road to the county line. The personnel unit numbers range from 200-299. Line officer designations range from Chief 1 to Chief 2, Captains 1-5, Lieutenants 1-5. The firehouse is located in Callao.

FAIRFIELDS VOL. FIRE DEPT: Serves the county east of Avalon Road and to the north of Mount Olive Road. The personnel unit numbers range from 600-656. The chief is designated as 600. The,line officers, assistant chief and captain use their own personnel unit number designations. Lieutenants, not being line officers, also use their own unit number designations. Fairfields has its main station in Reedville, with a sub-station located in Glebe Point.

MID-COUNTY VOLUNTEER RESCUE SQUAD:Serves the middle of the county from west of Cedar Point Road to East of Coan Stage Road. The personnel unit numbers range from 400-499. Operations officers use their personal unit designation numbers. The squad is stationed in Heathsville.
