EMS refer quite often to ward numbers. Check out this link to have the ward numbers, name and a map of the 23 wards in Ottawa. http://www.ottawa.ca/city_hall/ward/new_structure/index_en.html

Ottawa EMS uses a number of codes to differentiate their units. Here a description that Brad provided on EasternOntario Scanning - Yahoo Group. (I got his permission to post this)

PRU units Ottawa has the PRU (Paramedic Response Unit) program operational. These are the rapid-response Impalas, stationed one per political ward, with a single paramedic in it. They're 43xx units, and are often referenced as "PRU 43xx" on the air. These guys are only dispatched to Code-4 calls, and never, ever transport. They basically get to the scene first and "stop the clock" by initiating care while awaiting the transport unit. They'll also assess and downgrade to Code-3, which allows dispatch to reroute the other responding unit if there's a higher-priority call. If it's going to be a "Code 72" (no transport required), the PRU medic will do the paperwork, leaving the truck free.

If the transport truck arrives first (or is expected to arrive first), the PRU is cancelled.

Sierra units Also, sometimes there are trucks out there with only one medic. They're called "Sierra" units 4xxx (as in Single medic). These are less common and usually result when a medic calls in sick or something, and they have an odd number. Rather than have the spare medic sit around while a replacement is found, they send him out to first-respond. As you'd expect, Sierra units never transport, but do basically the same as a PRU in this case.

Also, when a call comes in dispatch needs to send the "closest most appropriate unit). If the truck responding is getting close to the end of their shift (such that doing the call would put them into overtime), they'll send a transport truck from farther away. The first unit will get there and start patient care, and then hand off to the second unit. This policy came about in an effort to stem the massive overtime costs of having a crew near the end of their shift get stuck with a call and spending the next six hours sitting in the ER waiting to offload the patient.

Of course, there's also the possibility of a call where they have reports of multiple patients (MVC, etc), so they'll send multiple trucks then, and the first one on scene can update to request fewer (or more) backup units.

Precepter Units Paramedic students need to work a certain number of hours during a couple of the semesters. They do this by running as a third crew member on a unit with medics who have taken on the role of training officer. They identify themselves as Precepter units to CACC and, where possible, get assigned to the more "interesting" calls so that the student gets to experience as much different stuff as possible. Also, where possible, they try to get transport units to take over so that the preceptor doesn't spend vast numbers of hours sitting around the ER waiting room. Of course, if the availability levels drop, then they're fair game for whatever comes up.

Tango units They are tactical paramedic units. For more info, refer to the City of Ottawa's Tactical Paramedic Unit website : http://www.ottawa.ca/residents/ambulance/structure_contact/operations/special/tactical_en.html)
