As of April 2013, in the works is a proposal for a possible combination of the Portage County Sheriff's Office Communications Center and the Stevens Point Police Department Communications Center. Details are currently being worked on with both agencies. Should this transition occur, Stevens Point Police Department Communications Personnel will transfer to the newly upgraded and expanded Portage County Sheriff's Office Communications Center.



Currently, In the event of an emergency at either dispatch center, the other is cross-trained and mechanically equipped to handle all of the county's public safety communications needs.

  • Most Fire Districts will identify themselves in plain English using their name, then apparatus type, then pecking order.

For example, the first wildland fire unit from Stockton would identify as "Stockton Brush 1." Others are migrating to a new numbering system based on their relative proximity to the county seat, Stevens Point. Using this new system, the fourth paramedic unit from Stevens Point would identify as "51-M-4."

  • Both Rudolph and Grand Rapids are headquartered in Wood County but have service areas in Portage County. Rudolph and Grand Rapids will identify themselves in plain English most of the time.
