Welcome to the Quebec collaboration article. This is where you, the user, may index any articles you develop for scanning related topics for your area.

Language

Travellers please note: The language spoken by the majority of Quebecois is French. This includes, unsurprisingly, police/fire/EMS personnel. As a result, if your ability to understand French is limited, so will your enjoyment of listening to your scanner! Two exceptions are aircraft and railroad operations, where both French and English will be heard.

One trick is to know your numbers. Most public safety agencies in the Montreal region are very good at the use of ten codes. If you know your numbers in French (up to 100), you should be able to get the gist of what is going on.

Regions

The province is divided into administrative regions. Within each region, there may be sub-regions (see Monteregie for example). Each region is divided into Regional County Municipalities (municipalité régionale de comté - "MRC") or "Equivalent Territories" (to RCMs). Montreal is an Urban Agglomeration and Laval is a city and both aer equivalent to an RCM. Most RCMs are further divided into cities, towns, villages, municipal parishes or, in the case of agglomerations, boros.

Aside from the regions above, there are several others that do not have their own pages: Bas-Saint-Laurent (01), Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean (02), Mauricie (04), Estrie (05), Outaouais (07), Nord-du-Québec (10), Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine (11), Chaudière-Appalaches (12), Laval (13), Lanaudière (14), Centre-du-Québec (17).

Because RadioReference's database and naming conventions originated with US practice, where there are generally only two levels of division in a state (county, city), Québec doesn't fit nicely. So something labeled "county" here might be what is known locally as a county as well, but may also be a region or a city!
