Fire Districts, Dispatch and Numbering

  • Most of St. Louis County's population falls within 23 fire protection districts which cross municipal boundaries. The remainder of the county is served by 20 municipal fire departments.
  • Two dispatch centers (East Central and Central County) dispatches almost all of the departments and protection districts. University City and Glendale self-dispatch for their fire departments, and Kirkwood dispatches for itself and Des Peres. There is a standardized apparatus numbering system for St. Louis County (which extends to neighboring counties). The City of St. Louis is an independent city, not part of St. Louis County, and has its own system of apparatus identification.

Apparatus Numbering

  • Fire apparatus in St. Louis County and nearby counties is identified by a 4 digit number.
  • The first two digits indicate the agency (fire protection district or fire department).
  • The 3rd digit usually indicates the house (1, 2, 3, etc.).
  • The last digit indicates the type of apparatus:
    • 0 or 1 is a pumper
    • 2 is an aerial or aerial pumper (quint)
    • 3 is a tanker or tanker/pumper
    • 4 is a rescue pumper
    • 5 is a rescue aerial pumper (rescue quint)
    • 6 is a rescue unit
    • 7 is an EMS unit
    • 8 is a brush or off road rescue unit
    • 9 is specialized equipment(Boats ETC)
