Fire/EMR/EMA
Sunflower County fire and emergency services are provided by several fire departments which are largely volunteer companies, emergency medical responders and the county emergency management agency. The county is divided into eight geographic districts for the purpose of fire protection, and that model is carried over into emergency medical response. Many of the county's volunteers fill multiple roles based on the need, whether it be firefighting operations, emergency medical, or roles with the emergency management office when unusual emergencies arise.
Fire and Emergency Services are coordinated by the Emergency Management Director who has the dual responsibility of being the County Fire Coordinator. Two deputy director/coordinators support the operational and planning aspects of countywide efforts, along with a County Training Officer and County Chaplain.
The Fire Coordinator and/or Deputy Coordinators respond on multi-district alarms, high hazard occupancy alarms (healthcare, apartments, schools, etc.), highway incidents, hazardous materials incidents, and incidents of greater significance.

Fire Task Forces
Fire Task Forces were developed in 2023 to provide additional manpower for fire response. The current manpower pools are drawn from firefighters and emergency medical responders who are dual-rostered as Emergency Management volunteers. Task Forces are dispatched by request to reinforce individual fire districts at an incident.
Consideration is being given to developing a standardized apparatus and manpower model for the Task Forces. This standardized model may see the Task Force bringing 2 additional engines, 1 additional tanker (for rural operations), their operators, 5-7 Firefighters and 2 Emergency Medical Responders.
