Discussion of Texas Department of Public Safety's Radio Unit Numbering, prior to 12/01/2009

Prior to October 1st, 2009, there were 8 DPS Regions. DPS units were assigned a 4 digit number, with the pattern:

ROAT
  • R= Region
  • O= Office (Subregion A uses an odd integer in the second position, Subregion B uses an even integer in the second position)
  • A= Area (assigned to a Corporal's Area)
  • T= Trooper

For example: In Region 3A one would hear 3100s, 3300s, and 3500s; in Region 3B one would hear 3200s, 3400s, and 3600s.

  • 3100- Being the Region 3A Commander
  • 3200- Being the Region 3B Commander

Sergeants and higher, Lt.s, Capt.s, Majors, have a third integer as a zero; Corporals have a last number of zero.

  • 3X0X- Sergeants through officers
  • 3XX0- Corporals

Highway Patrol Officers were then assigned a trooper number, based on their Sergeant's assigned area, for example, 328X would be assigned to the patrol area of THP Sgt. 3208 would be Cpl 3280, troops would be 3281...3289.

Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Troopers have a third digit 6.

There were also 9000 unit numbers assigned to Driver's License Troopers, adminstrative personnel, Criminal Law Enforcement personnel. The second digit was the Region, and the third integer is the office number within that Region. For example, with Driver's License Troopers, the second digit is the Region, and the third integer is the office number within that Region, so 93XX, are DL Troopers in Region 3.
