History
In 2009, the old EDACS Narrowband system was converted to an OpenSky system using 2-slot TDMA voice. Tyco P5300 handheld radios are used.
Motorola and M/A-COM were both approached about replacing the old EDACS Narrowband system, and because of the 900 MHz frequencies, iDEN and OpenSky were the only options (nobody makes a P25 system for 900 MHz yet). Continental also did not want to move onto the ARINC 800 MHz iDEN system that is already at the airport.
The system is now a 2-site system. They took 5 of the channels and moved to the cargo facility just west of JFK Blvd., and the rest remain at the hangar north of Will Clayton. This move was to provide better coverage to Terminals A and B, as well as to the "dead zone" under the hangar antennas.
As they have been replacing the radios, the system was running in EDACS compatible mode, and now that the radios have all been upgraded, they switched on OpenSky to double the system's capacity.
