Model VX-180

General Information

The VX-180 is available in VHF high band (VX-180V) and UHF (VX-180U) models. Programming is accomplished with Vertex CE44 software and CT-42A programming cable. Generic versions of this cable available on eBay and elsewhere can also be used to program the radio, but buy generic at your own risk. It is recommended that you run the CE44 software on an older bare-bones PC running DOS exclusively to eliminate hardware conflicts and processor speeds that the software cannot deal with. The author uses a 75 MHz Pentium IBM PC running IBM PC-DOS 6.3 to program this radio.

Amateur 70cm Band Programming (VX-180U - UHF Model)

While the advertised frequency range of the VX-180U(D) is 450-485 MHz, the author has found that the radio will accept programming of amateur frequencies in the 70cm band right out of the box, without any modifications. The radio seems to perform well in this frequency range, although no measurements have been made with test equipment.
