Virginia State Police Unit IDs

Units that ID as "Car XXX" or "9 XXX" aren't VSP units, they are other agency units with VSP capability (VDOT,DMV,ABC,VDGIF, and few locals). Mobile radios are a mix of Aerotrons from the mid 70's and GE/Ericsson/MA-COM s with a few Motorolas mixed in. A couple of Midlands have also been seen in use. Portables are Motorola HT220, MT500 and GE MP-A units with an odd assortment of newer MA-COM and Kenwood (!) sprinkled in. Lowband radios have one frequency programmed in, for SIRS, regardless of what the rumors are, no link to DOC or NCHP in these. Mainly GE Mastr II's and some older Aerotron units with occasional Orions seen. Many members have scanners in their cars. The elevated feedpoint celphone antennae seen on most of the patrol vehicles are for the MCT's (panasonic toughbooks). More and more messaging is being conducted over the "terminal" to ease radio congestion. Units can access the dispatch CAD directly to mark on duty/off duty/traffic stop/meal break thus opening up more airtime for voice. Some members run completely silent, passing no voice traffic, but dispatchers, by policy, must acknowledge receipt of each terminal message. No encryption is used in the course of normal field ops, but occasionally it is heard on the EPU frequency. A few members also have capabilities on local agency systems, but this is not common, as a separate radio must be carried for this.
