General Information

The West Virginia Air National Guard's 167th Airlift Wing/167th Airlift Squadron is assigned the C-5A Galaxy. The first C-5A for the 167th arrived at Martinsburg RAP on December 4th, 2006 (70-0459). The 167th AW is currently equipped with thirteen C-5A aircraft.

Two aircraft that were previously part of the unit were decommissioned at Davis-Monthan AFB in March 2011 -

  • 69-0027 on March 21st, an un-repairable crack in the mainframe aft-wing section.
  • 70-0459 on March 24th, chronic issues with air refueling.


The 167th based at Martinsburg is to re-equip in 2014. The C-5's currently assigned to it will be replaced by eight C-17's. This change was announced on 2/3/2012.

Frequencies used

  • 297.0 "Galaxy" callsign for Command Post, "Pikeside" callsign for Base Ops.

Per a post on 5/6/2011 in the Maryland Sticky Thread For MilAir VI (2011), possible new frequencies in the near future are "229.000 is listed as a 167AS SOF. Also check 297.900 302.300 335.850 MHz for the replacement of 297.000 MHz".
