Cordless microphones or "wireless microphones" can be found transmitting throughout the RF spectrum, most often in the 70-74 MHz, 170-220 MHz, and 580-800 MHz ranges. Many modern professional wireless microphone systems are frequency agile - that is, tuneable to different frequencies - to find clear channels and avoid interference, with most operating within unused television channels.

Wireless microphone transmit power levels are normally very low, to reduce the potential for interference. Reception thus requires close proximity or use of directional antennas.

NOTE: Operation of wireless microphones on most frequencies in the 614-806 MHz band in the USA is prohibited. See the FCC Wireless Microphones page.
