Please help , I have a BCD396XT

You have several options here; but probably your best one (at least to get started) is to start reading the following;

  1. On the wiki home page, there's a section called 'Links for Newcomers'. In there, you will find links to articles called Trunking Basics, Common Conventional Programming Questions and Common Trunking Programming Questions. Bookmark the Glossary as it has links to definitions of hundreds of scanning related terms. In addition, you will need a serial-USB converter to connect the scanner to your PC, unless you have an older one that actually has a serial port. The Connecting scanners via USB article discusses this in great detail.
  2. Further down on the wiki home page, in the 'Popular Topics' section, click on the link for the Uniden DMA FAQ. Read the first 3 articles
  3. Download/read the Easier to Read manual for the 396XT, the link for which is at the bottom of the DMA FAQ.
  4. Go get a copy of the freeware FreeScan - the FreeScan User Guide will go a long way to help you understand the software.
  5. Go to our forums for additional help. Software questions should go to the Software forum, Uniden scanner related questions should be placed in the Uniden forum, and we have lots of forums- by state. Be sure to go to the User CP and state where you are - county/state will do. Let folks know that you have FreeScan and a 396XT. As you will discover, FreeScan has its own set of forums, so any questions related to that software should be placed there for faster responses.

Lots of reading here, but necessary. Going to the forums is important - not everyone knows these talk pages are here. Please post your questions as I've outlined, and there will be lots of folks here who can help.
