In accordance with the Department of Defense's 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Committee, all of its aircraft have been allocated to other units within the United States Air Force. The 178th has now transitioned to the 178th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing and their new primary mission will be the operations of the MQ-1 Predator drone aircraft.
The 178th Fighter Wing was assigned both the F-16C and F-16D Fighting Falcon aircraft.

The F-16C is a multi-role fighter, capable of both air-to-air and air-to-ground

maneuvering/fighting. The F-16D is a two seat aircraft with the same capabilities

utilized mainly for training purposes.

The 162nd FS flew their final sorties on July 30, 2010. The last USAF aircraft left the unit on September 20, ending the flying mission of the 162nd FS.

In April 2007, the RNLAF has maintained a squadron of aircraft at Springfield,

designated as the 306th Detachment. The final class of Dutch pilots graduated the eight-and-a-half-month IQT or "B-Course" in October 2010. They were the sixth and final group to graduate from Springfield. The program is moving back to Tuscon IAP to train with the 162nd FW (AZ ANG), where it was previously based from 1989-2007.

Two aircraft are already back at Tuscon as of October 29, but a handful will remain at Springfield until late 2010.
