I tested both a BCD996T 'Rec' output and a PRO-43 Headphone output with a stereo audio cable and they work just fine. The left channel connects to the tip while the right channel connects to the ring.

If the output jack is mono, then the tip gets the audio which ends up in the left channel of a stereo cable. The ring makes no connection and is not a factor. The sleeve always makes the return connection.

Some newer scanners employ stereo output jacks in anticipation of users having stereo cables already for their iPods and other audio devices. A mono cable will short out the ring to the return contact and might kill the audio output entirely depending on the design of the scanner's output circuitry.

So you're safer with a stereo cable than a mono cable these days.
