The USCG are heavy users of the Marine VHF Channels; Channel 16 is reserved for distress, safety and calling, while channel 22A is utilized for special warnings, Marine Safety and other announcements. Other frequencies utilized vary from sector to sector.

Air Operations

New nationwide United States Coast Guard frequencies, as of January 1, 2005, are listed below. The frequencies were changed due to the mandate to vacate 380-400 MHz so that the spectrum could be used for military Trunked Radio Systems.

HF Operations

Operationally, the US Coast Guard divides the US into 2 separate areas. LANTAREA consists of USCG Districts 1, 5, 7, 8 and 9. PACAREA includes the western Districts, 11, 13, 14 and 17. HF communications, as well as a number of other missions are the responsibility of the two "CAMS." USCG CAMSLANT is the largest of the 2 CAMS with approx 178 active duty, reserve and auxiliary personnel. Located on the campus of Naval Security Group, Northwest in Chesapeake, VA and its remote transmitter site, NMN is located in the old town of Pungo, VA now part of Virginia Beach, VA. CAMSLANT covers Sea Areas 3 and 4 from Brownsville, TX to the Maine/Canadian border. CAMSLANT has 3 additional subordinate commands, each with a separate transmit and receive site. COMMSTA Boston (NMF), COMMSTA Miami (NMA), and COMMSTA New Orleans (NMG). CAMSLANT also controls a NAVTEX transmitter site on Charleston, SC (NME). All HF transmissions such as flight following, WEFAX, SITOR, GMDSS/DSC, NAVTEX, etc originate from CAMSLANT and are broadcast from one of the 4 remote transmitter sites.

USCG CAMSPAC is located in PT Reyes, CA and is the smaller of the 2 CAMS. The mission responsibilities are virtually identical to that of CAMSLANT. CAMSPAC also has remote transmit and receive sites and has some support functions for COMMSTA Kodiak, AK.

All are under the Command of either LANT-6 or PAC-6, a CAPT, (O-6) and they are e responsible to the Flag Officer Commanding, the CG-6 Directorate, C4IT branch.

The USCG uses 4 different types of mechanisms for HF Radio Communications. Note, all voice emissions are USB regardless of frequency.

The first method is the use of the Customs Over The Horizon Enforcement Network COTHEN ALE Network. This network supports the majority of both normal flight operations and flight following as well as operational coordination for US Coast Guard fixed and rotary wing aircraft. COTHEN became the primary HF communications system for USCG assets as of 2010.

The next method is the use of a secondary USCG HF Radio network that primarily supports Fixed and rotary wing aircraft which are not equipped with COTHEN capable HF radios. The following frequencies are available although 5 and 8 mHz are used most:
