The Municipal District of Wood Buffalo is the most north-eastern region of Alberta. It is bordered by Wood Buffalo National Park and the Northwest Territories to the north; Mackenzie County and the Municipal District of Opportunity to the west; Lac La Biche County and Improvement District 139 to the south; and the province of Saskatchewan to the east.
