Fire Department Apparatus and Personnel

Broome County generally uses the more common North American monikers to identify apparatus types. Terms such as pumper (when referring to an engine company), wagon, tender, or truck (when referring to a ladder company). Listed below are the apparatus monikers used in Broome County.

Engine - Engine company

Squad - Engine company with some rescue company capabilities

Tanker - Tanker

Pumper-Tanker - Tanker with some engine company capabilities

Rescue - Rescue company

Ladder - Ladder company

Tower - Ladder company

Quint - Combination of an engine company and a ladder company

Utility - Smaller apparatus intended for scene support/traffic control purposes

A.T.V. - All-terrain vehicle intended for off-road operations

E.M.S. - B.L.S. equipped fly-car utilized by fire departments for first response purposes

Midi/Mini - Smaller/off-road capable engine company

Brush - Smaller apparatus intended for brush fire suppression operations

Support Unit - Apparatus that carries scene support/rehabilitation equipment

Command Vehicle - Mobile command vehicle

F.A.S.T. - Apparatus being utilized for transporting equipment/personnel for a Rapid Intervention Team

Boat - Rescue boat intended for water rescue or recovery operations (there are currently no fire suppression boats in the county)

Traffic Control Trailer - Trailer containing traffic control equipment/devices

Foam - Apparatus intended for foam fire suppression operations

Air Trailer - Trailer containing equipment capable of refilling S.C.B.A. bottles
