Cote-Nord County (QC)

From The RadioReference Wiki

Welcome to Côte-Nord (the North Coast), the largest administrative region, or county, by land area in the Province of Québec. Here you will find useful references for monitoring while in the region. Please monitor this page for updates and changes as it is a work in progress.

Language

It is important to note the Québécois dialect of French is the language of the region, in addition to the First Nations dialects of Innu and Naskapi. Though the majority of public safety personnel and residents also speak English, it rarely used in radio communications. If you are visiting the region and only speak English, it is highly recommended that you learn some basic French such as numbers, directions, and words referring to roadways.

Ambulance

Paramedic services in Côte-Nord are provided by three companies on behalf of the Government of Québec. Fermont is the only town in Côte-Nord with their own ambulance. All communications, with the exception of Fermont, take place on the RENIR P25 trunked system using strapped full-time encryption.

Law Enforcement

Sûreté du Québec: District 9

Sûreté du Québec (Security Québec) is the provincial law enforcement agency of Québec. They provide the majority of policing in the province, particularly outside major cities. They also serve to compliment indigenous police officers from the various First Nations tribal police. SQ District 9 is responsible for Côte-Nord. As of September 2021, District 9 continues to operate on analog VHF frequencies, but will be switching to the RENIR P25 trunked system with strapped full-time encryption by 2023.

Protection de la Faune

There are about 360 Agents de Protection de la Faune (Wildlife Protection Officers) located in more than 80 service points throughout Québec, responsible for the application of the laws and regulations governing wildlife. In Côte-Nord, there are officers assigned to the Sûreté du Québec barracks at Baie-Comeau, Port-Cartier, and Sept-Îles. Wildlife Protection Officers operate on the RENIR P25 trunked system and several RENIR P25 conventional sites, using strapped full-time encryption.

Local Police

There is currently no non-indigenous local law enforcement active in Côte-Nord. The departments in Baie-Comeau, Port-Cartier, and Sept-Îles have been disbanded. All regular policing, with the exception of the above listed First Nations with their own agencies, is provided solely by Sûreté du Québec. RCMP/GRC is present in the region, but operates as an investigative agency and does not provide patrol or traffic enforcement functions as they do elsewhere in Canada.
