Fairfax County (VA) Police Radio/CAD Designators

  • Patrol Bureau Commander�Division I Radio: "Patrol Bureau 1" CAD: "PB01"
  • Patrol Bureau Commander�Division II Radio: "Patrol Bureau 2" CAD: "PB02"
  • Patrol Bureau Commander�Division III Radio: "Patrol Bureau 3" CAD: "PB03"

The following radio and CAD designators are to be used by patrol personnel. Shift identifiers will be used at all times as part of the mobile unit designator. The shift identifiers are as follows, except where noted below:

  • A�Midnight and Early Midnight
  • B�Day Work
  • C�Evening
  • D�Early Day Work
  • E�Early Evening

A representative sample of the Mobile Unit Designators for patrol personnel (officers, field unit members, sergeants, second lieutenants, assistant station commanders, and station commanders) is provided in Appendix I to this SOP.

  • Patrol Second Lieutenants Radio: "Car" + station number + shift identifier CAD: "0" + station number + shift identifier
    • Additional second lieutenants working the same shift would replace the shift designator with "D" or "E."
  • Patrol Sergeants Radio: "Car" + station number multiplied by 10 + shift identifier CAD: "0" + station number multiplied by 10 + shift identifier
    • Additional sergeants working the same shift would be numbered consecutively.
  • Patrol Officers Area Cars Radio: "Scout" + patrol area + shift identifier CAD: "Patrol Area" + shift identifier
  • Second unit in a patrol area: Substitute "5" for third digit in the patrol area. Radio: "Scout" + first two digits of patrol area + "5" + shift identifier CAD: First two digits of patrol area + "5" + shift identifier Unit assigned to two or more areas simultaneously shall use the designator for the lowest numerical patrol area assigned.


The Public Safety Communications Center shall be notified in all cases of multiple core area assignments. Core areas are determined by the first two digits in the three-digit designator.

  • Field Units Radio: "Scout" + "9" + station number + a consecutive number beginning at 0 + shift identifier CAD: "9" + station number + a consecutive number beginning at 0 + shift identifier Patrol units manned by two sworn, fully trained officers. (This designator is not used to indicate an auxiliary or trainee is present.)     • NOTE: To preclude the need to use three-digit designators, it is recommended that CIS call signs not be permanently assigned.
  • Crime Prevention Radio: "CP" + station number CAD: "CP0" + station number
  • Second Crime Prevention Officer Radio: "CP" + station number multiplied by ten CAD: "CP" + station number multiplied by ten Additional units would be numbered consecutively thereafter.
  • Crime Analyst Radio: "CA" + station number CAD: "CA0" + station number
  • Communications Assistants/Desk Officers Radio: "PCA" + station number CAD: "PCA" + station number
  • Stake?Out Units Radio: "X?ray" + station number multiplied by ten, then numbered consecutively CAD: "X0" + station number multiplied by ten, then numbered consecutively
    • NOTE: "X?ray" 90 through 99 are reserved for use by CIB. "X?ray" 1?19 are to be used for stakeouts not specific to a single station.
  • Shopping Center Units Radio: "Shopping Center" + station number + a consecutive number from 1 to 9 as needed CAD: "SC" + station number + a consecutive number Non?

    • "Duty Officer 1," "Duty Officer 2," and "Duty Officer 3" will be used by the patrol bureau commanders; "4" will be used by majors, "5" will be used by captains, and "6" will be used by lieutenants while serving as duty officers on a temporary basis.
  • Youth Services Radio: "Youth Services 1" through "Youth Services 99" CAD: "YS" + consecutive number from 01 through 99 (e.g., "YS04")

  • Police Chaplains Radio: "Chaplain" + station number CAD: "CHP" + station number
  • Administrative Units Administrative unit designators are for civilian and sworn personnel who are not addressed elsewhere in this SOP. Each bureau prefix shall be followed by consecutive numbers as assigned by the affected bureau commander. In all cases, 1 through 10 should be reserved for supervisors of units within these entities (e.g., "Admin 3" should be utilized by a supervisor in Administrative Support).
  • The following examples should be used when assigning designators:

  • Chief of Police and Deputy Chiefs of Police Radio: "Unit" + assigned number CAD: "U00" + assigned number Sworn and civilian staff under direction of the Chief of Police or Deputy Chiefs of Police Radio: "Unit" + assigned three?digit number. The first of the three digits will coincide with the number of the unit to which the staff person is assigned; for example, staff assigned to Unit 1, Chief of Police, will use three-digit numbers ranging from 100?199.
