🚧 Hawthorne Tower Deconstruction Marks End of an Era 🏗️FB Post/Video

  • This week, the Johnson County Emergency Services Board began deconstructing the 400-foot Hawthorne Tower — a long-standing symbol of both military history and local public safety communication.

🛰️ From Cold War to Countywide Communications

  • The tower was originally constructed for missile silo communications in the 1960s as part of the Whiteman Radio Relay Annex #3. After the military decommissioned the site, Johnson County Emergency Services Board (JCESB) began pursuing the property in 2009.
  • With the help of U.S. Representatives Ike Skelton and Vicky Hartzler, as well as FEMA and the General Services Administration, JCESB acquired the property in 2012 via a perpetuity deed, granted for public safety use. This saved the County an estimated $500,000 in potential construction costs.
  • 📡 Service to Public Safety - Since acquisition, the tower has served as a centralized site for dispatch radio infrastructure and played a key role in the county's legacy VHF system. At its peak, it supported high-site radio transmissions for various public safety agencies throughout Johnson County.
  • 🔧 Why It’s Being Removed - With the county’s full transition to a modern 800 MHz P25 trunked radio system, the tower is no longer needed for primary operations. Structural concerns and aging equipment further led to the decision to decommission it. The site is being cleared in line with our commitment to efficient, resilient infrastructure.

We are proud of the role this tower played in supporting both national defense and local public safety, and we thank all who contributed to its legacy.
