Elizabeth, City of (4)

Elizabeth Police Department Units (100)

Elizabeth Police operate on the Union County Site of the New Jersey Interoperability Communication System (NJICS). Some investigative and tactical talkgroups use encryption.

EPD does not use car numbers as radio identifiers. Rather they use a system that identifies the given unit's sector and type, or rank. At any given time, on any given day, a unit may cover multiple sectors. All cars are two-man cars unless denoted by Sierra suffix or Safenet (Urban Enterprise Zone) assignment.

  • Alpha units are day shift, 06:45-17:45, patrol units. For example 7-Alpha would be a day shift patrol unit assigned to sector 7, and so on.
  • Baker units are night shift, 17:45-06:45, patrol units. For example 4-Baker would be a night shift unit assigned to sector 3, and so on. These are also known as the midnight cars.
  • Sierra units are single man cars regardless of shift. For example 2-Sierra would be a single man car assigned to sector 2.
  • Power units are so named because they are assigned to the highest crime sectors and work the highest crime hours, 17:00-04:00. For example Power 11 would be a high-crime area vehicle assigned to sector 11. These are the busiest units at night.
  • Safenet (or Net) units are so names because they are community policing oriented units, assigned to Urban Enterprise Zones and retail shopping areas. For example, Elizabeth Avenue, Midtown, Elmora Ave.
  • Chief is Unit 1.
  • Captains radio ID's are single digits.
  • Lieutenants radio ID's end in 4's. For example Unit 24, 34, 44, etc.
  • Sergeants radio ID's are 25 thru 31.
  • Detectives radio ID's are badge numbers or last names.
  • Emergency Service Unit radio ID is Tac.

If a unit is utilizing an unmarked car, their identifier will include the prefix "unmarked", such as "Unmarked 3-Baker" or "Unmarked Power-10".
