Using drivers with an older version of the USB-1

From The RadioReference Wiki

One caveat... on some of the larger Win10 updates, you may need to quickly run through the driver procedure again
to re-install the older driver. Once you have that driver download stored on your computer, and used the
procedure a couple of times, it takes less than 30 seconds to re-install the older driver if needed after
a Win10 update. If you can't get this procedure to work, there is no other work-around for the older USB-1 cable.
  • Download the PL-2303 Vista Driver Installer.exe from this page.. the one dated 10/22/2006.
  • Run that exe file to install the drivers on your computer, and then restart your computer and connect the cable to just your computer.
  • Next, open Device Manager, and under Ports (COM & LPT) look for an entry for the cable... it will most likely have a yellow exclamation point and a note about the PL2303HXA chip being phased out.
  • Right click on that PL2303HXA line, and select Update Driver, then select Browse my computer for drivers.
  • Next, select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer, then highlight the top driver (the oldest one) in that list, Prolific USB-to-Serial COM Port Version: 3.2.0.0 [7/31/2007] and click Next.
  • Now check under the Ports (COM & LPT) and see if the Prolific USB-to-Serial COM Port is listed there with a port number assigned to it.
  • If you now see a port number assigned to the cable, your cable is working properly... now you need to set up your software to connect to that port number. Any issue you have getting that to happen is a software issue rather than a cable issue.
