Valley Communications Center (ValleyCom)

Located in Kent, Washington, ValleyCom dispatches for South King County police (Sheriff units excepted), fire departments/districts, and King County Medic One. They are the primary answer point in Tukwila, Renton, Kent, Auburn, Algona, Pacific, Federal Way, and Des Moines.

Police

Call Signs

Generally speaking, all ValleyCom dispatched police departments utilize the county-wide accepted method of unit designation. The prefix (1-3) designates which shift it is. Shifts are department-dependent. It should also be noted that due to having more than three shifts, Kent always uses the "2" prefix.

1 = Daytime Shift
2 = Swing Shift
3 = Graveyard/Nighttime Shift

The letter indicates which police department it is as follows:

ADAM = Auburn PD
BOY = Black Diamond PD
DAVID = Des Moines PD
K9 = Canine unites (see below)
KING = Kent PD
LINCOLN = Algona PD
PAUL = Pacific PD
ROBERT = Renton PD
SAM = Regional Drug Task Force
TOM = Tukwila PD
WILLIAM = Federal Way PD
X-RAY = Joint Drug/Gang Task Force (created by Des Moines PD and KCSO)

Finally, a one or two-digit number signifies which sector the officer is patrolling in.

To put it all together - 3 LINCOLN 34 would mean an officer working a graveyard shift for Algona PD in the "34" sector.

Cannine unites also have a radio indentifier. It is "K9" followed by a two digit number. The first digit represents the city, and the second the sector.

1X = Kent PD
2X = Tukwila PD
3X = Renton PD
4X = Auburn PD
5X = Federal Way PD
6X = Des Moines PD
7X = Black Diamond PD

Fire/EMS

All fire departments and districts have unique designators. While some like the Valley Regional Fire Authority may use one set of numbers (i.e. 3X units), others such as North Highline FPD appear among 1X numbers. Fire apparatus (engines/ladders/aids), as wells as Medic One units, all are dispatched via ValleyCom.

Radio Usage

Fire 1 - Dispatch for all fire and medical calls. Also used to issue announcements,
           and for apparatus units to update dispatcher.
Fire 2 - Medical Emergencies/EMS Calls
Fire 3 - Fire alarms, traffic accidents, spills, etc...
Fire 4 - Structure Fires
Fire 5 thru 7 - Used for big fires and may also be used as training channels.

A typical dispatch is scripted as follows:

Apparatus ID(s)
Channel to respond on
Type of Incident responding to
Location of Incident (including apt./building/suite numbers)
Repeat apparatus, channel, incident type/location
Fire 1 clear at (current time in Military format)

Example: "Engine 51 on Fire 2 for an ill patient. 444 Andover Park East. Engine 51 on Fire 2 for an ill patient. 444 Andover Park East. Fire 1 is clear at 21:05."
