RS/GRE PRO-92 Handheld Scanner

The Pro-92 was manufactured for RadioShack by GRE and was the first handheld LTR trunking scanner.

There are 3 firmware versions of the Pro-92. The first, 1.00, introduced in late 1999 with the first Pro-92 models, uses sub-audible data Motorola trunking that would drop transmissions if it thought it lost the data. The second, 3.25, introduced in mid 2000 with the PRO-92A, fixed that with control channel trunking. And the third, 3.28, introduced in late 2000 as the PRO-92B, is essentially the same as the 92A with minor SAME weather alert improvements.

  • The difference between the 3 versions on Motorola systems: The original version of the PRO-92 does not use any control channel data to trunk. It instead scans all the voice channels and pulls the talkgroup information from the sub-audible low speed datastream contained within each voice transmission. Poor reception and extremely busy systems would cause missed transmissions.

The A version set out to fix this by utilizing the control channel data directly. When voice grant information is being sent over the control channel, it broadcasts a channel number that the transmission is assigned to. This channel number, when calculated against a bandplan, results in a frequency that can be used by the scanner to tune in and listen to the transmission. The bandplan is hard coded in ROM, so it is unable to be changed. The B version is the same as the A version, as far as trunked systems are concerned.

All that is needed for the original version of the PRO-92 to receive rebanded transmissions are the new frequencies.

• • How to tell the difference;

1. Turn the radio over and look on the back for the information sticker. In the upper right-hand corner, it will list the catalog number. If there is no A or B next to it, you have an original PRO-92.
2. A more surefire way to tell in case of board swapping is to press 3 during the welcome screen. This shows the firmware's version number. If you have version 1.00, you have the original version.
